The ghost, or the harbinger is an omen for bad shit to be going down. So a harbinger of death, or misfortune is a more accurate title. Although the ghost does not blatantly say bad things are upon everybody; the reader can make the assumption on his own.
The ghost ask of hamlet to avenge his father's death (which was murdered at the hands of his uncle). The sighting of the ghost cause's hamlet to question his own sanity; but the ghost tells him to be chill and tells him he's sane.
So by acknowledging the ghost, hamlet pretty much causes a butterfly effect, which gets himself and everybody else killed.
